Take in all the major cities of Morocco with their mosques, markets and busy town squares, while still setting aside some time to relax and unplug in the breath-taking sahara sand dunes near Merzouga village. This extensive tour will take you along the coast, through lush forests, over majestic mountains and into palm-treed oases.
Your driver will pick you up at the airport and bring you to a local riad. A half day excursion to the stunning Ourika Valley to see traditional berber villages is available for those arriving early. If arriving in the evening, you can take some time to explore the famous city square near the riad before settling in to sleep.
This day we’ll have a tour by a local guide. We’ll explore tombs, palaces, and the famous souks. Many different options are available so let your guide know what interests you, whether its architecture, lush gardens or shopping.
The next morning, we’ll set out early to travel to Casablanca where we’ll visit the impressive Hassan II Mosque. After lunch we head to the capital, Rabat, where we will visit the mausoleum of Mohammed V and Kasbah des Oudaias. Spend the night in Rabat in a local riad or hotel.
Today we’ll make a stop at Volubilis, Morocco’s largest and best preserved Roman ruins. We will also travel through Meknes, the third Imperial city. From here it is a short drive to Fez, the oldest of the imperial cities. Spend the night in Fez at a charming riad.
Today in the vibrant atmosphere of Fez we have a full day tour with a local guide. We will visit the Medersa Bou Inania, the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss and the Andalusian and the Quaraoiyin mosques. We visit the Nejjarine Museum Square with its fountain from the 18th century. Fez’s medina is a maze of more than 9000 small narrow cobbled streets. We’ll spend a second night at the riad in Fez.
Heading out early in a southeast direction we will make a brief stop in Ifrane, the Lion City before continuing in the Middle Atlas mountains with the cedar forests of Midelt. After lunch and possibly a visit with the wild monkeys, we will approach the deep south at Errachidia, witnessing panoramic views of gorges and oases zigzagging through the earth. Finally, we’ll arrive in the desert where we can relax with a cup of tea at Merzouga. Your camel guide will soon greet you and lead you and your camel caravan deep into the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi until you arrive at our desert camp. In the evening we have dinner around a campfire, and sleep in traditional wool tents; a true wilderness experience.
Wake up early to see a spectacular desert sunrise if you like and then hop back onto the camels to return to Merzouga village where a breakfast will be waiting for you. If you like, there is time for a quick shower in Merzouga before we head out again. Today we will pass through the awe-inspiring Todra Gorge and then finally to the Dades Valley with its famous “monkey fingers” rock formation. We will spend the night at Dades.
After breakfast, we’ll continue to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara and now famous in Hollywood as the backdrop for many blockbuster films. We will drive along the river in the Ounila valley, known for its kasbahs, to visit the fortified city of Ait Benhaddou, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This is the ancient caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Next, we’ll pass through the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass and then down to the plains arriving in Marrakech in the late afternoon, where we’ll spend the last night at a local riad.
After breakfast, we’ll transfer you to the airport in time for your returning flight or to a location of your choice in Marrakech if you wish to stay longer. If you did not do a short excursion to the Ourika valley on the first day of your tour, it is possible to do the tour this day if your flight is departing late in the evening.
